(Mr. BLANKbottle)
Pieter Walser is the founder of BLANKbottle. What on earth is BLANKbottle?! Rests assured that BLANKbottle wine is anything BUT BLANK!
This innovative company saw the light in 2004. Pieter was tired of the ‘norm’ and was up for the challenge to start making wine with a twist. He wanted to show the hypocrite wine drinkers of the world that it is not all about the label on the bottle. In fact it is all about the wine inside the bottle. It is about what the wine taste like. This is why he creates superb wines with labels that merely says: “BLANKbottle”. No information about the blend or cultivar, or anything about the vintage. Just BLANK!
You might wonder how you will know what you are drinking. The answer is as easy as this:
Step 1: Pop the cork and pour the wine (Pieter is a bit of a romantic and only makes use of natural cork).
Step 2: Kick back, let your hair down and TASTE the wine.
Step 3: Now go online to www.blankbottle.co.za and search for your BATCH name, then you will find the information that you have been looking for. I can guarantee that you will be flabbergasted once you see what ‘ingredients’ this maverick used to create the wine.
How does Pieter do it?
He forms alliances with vineyards, winemakers and wineries from all over in South Africa. He then picks the cream of the crop that works for him and implement his expertise to create unique blends of premium character.
Sounds a bit like a mad scientist?
Scientist he is indeed, mad, well … let’s leave it at that. Pieter graduated with his Bachelors of Science degree in Agriculture, Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch in 2004. When he is not working frantically in his laboratory testing hundreds of small sample bottles, blending, tasting and blending some more, he grabs his surf board and head towards the beach to ride a wave or two.
Hands on Wine have two of Pieter’s wines in our portfolio:
Blankbottle The Boss Shiraz/Zinfandel
Blankbottle Alexa Chenin Blanc/Viognier 2009.
Purchase any of his other wines on-line from www.blankbottle.co.za .
Having a BLANKbottle in your wine collection is indeed something you can brag about at the next braai. Let’s face it, what better party trick than to open your BLANKbottle, pour the wine and let your friends guess what the blend is. Placing bets on the guesses could earn you a just enough moolah to purchase your next BLANKbottle.
