We are so sorry the owl did not survive

08 March 2010

We had a fabulous visit with winemaker Lourens van der Westhuizen and his beautiful wife Lizelle on his family farm Arendsig, just outside of Robertson. Welcoming us was the latest addition to their (brand new) family;  a St Barnard puppy called Boerseun . Don’t let the word puppy fool you – this guy is not at all that little and most definitely the king of his castle.

The couple spoiled us with good food, great company and fantastic wine – Arendsig originals offcourse (we will be featuring one of these babies in our portfolio very soon).  Lourens’s original cellar is now used as a beautiful tasting/dining room and also hosted their wedding in December – breathtaking scenery completes this perfect picture. Fun was had by all, until it was time to head home…

On our way back we hit a bird (we thought it was a duck) with our minibus. After freaking out and turning around to see if there is anything we can do to save the animal, we learned that it was indeed an owl.  Siskha generously offered her pashmina to wrap the owl in to keep warm while Steve sat holding it in his arms, cradling it like a baby. We arranged to meet the SPCA at Worcester and just as we pulled up, the owl awoke kicking and screaming. A bite on the finger later, Steve managed to hand the owl over to its caretaker -  pashmina and all. It was a very heartfelt rescuing effort and we were all very positive that the owl will survive. Unfortunately we learned the next day that our friend did not make it after all. Very sad indeed.
